The work of Charles Correa covers an extraordinarily wide range of architectural and planning projects, varying in scale from small private residences and housing complexes to entire townships and extensions to major cities.
It is a body of work which has, over a period of almost four decades, evolved into a holistic philosophy that addresses a spectrum of issues, ranging from the strictly architectonic to urban economics and sociology – all within the context of an over-riding concern for cultural values in a time of accelerated change.
The architectural profession has recognised the crucial importance of Correa’s work for many years now.
He has taught in several universities, both in India and abroad. In 1984, he was awarded the RIBA Gold Medal by Prince Charles at Hampton Court; in 1989, the Gold Medal of the Indian Institute of Architects; in 1991, the Gold Medal of the UlA (the
International Union of Architects); and in 1994, the Praemium Imperiale of the Japan Art Association.
