This volume of Marg presents seven articles on Indian art offering new material and interpretations. Four of these articles are concerned with Buddhist sculpture. These include a discussion of early Buddha images in the round created in Saka-Kushan Mathura, the relationship between an extraordinary Gandharan bronze Buddha and imperial Roman portraits; the identification of the second woman seen frequently in eastern Indian stone representations of Buddha’s Enlightenment; and a review of the continuation of Buddhism and its art in Tamil Nadu from the Pallava period to the 18th century. In addition, the article on the technical aspects of Himalayan bronzes should interest both art historians and scientists.
