The numerous sculptures and structures at Bodhgaya, documenting centuries of artistic patronage, merit attention as records of the visual expressions appropriate to this important site. These works also exerted significant influence upon the creation of Buddhist art outside India, as pilgrims are known to have taken replicas or records of the images and buildings that they saw at Bodhgaya in order to re-create them in their own lands. In this volume essays discuss the art from Bodhgaya, including sculptures, votive objects and the most important structure at the site, the Mahabodhi temple. One essay explores the relationship between Bodhgaya adn the nearby Hindu pilgrimage site of Gaya, while others address the importance of Bodhgaya and its art in Sri Lanka, South-east Asia, Nepal and Tibet.
