Delhi: The City of Future presents a comprehensive history of the struggle for self-government in Delhi, beginning with the formation of the Province of Delhi in 1912—now the Union Territory of Delhi. The book chronicles the author’s persistent fight over the past 32 years for a unified administrative structure, including the establishment of a Legislative Assembly, to address the city’s complex problems caused by a multiplicity of governing authorities. It offers readers a clear picture of Delhi’s political and administrative evolution, past and present, and discusses the steps needed to transform it into a 21st-century capital in line with the vision of Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi.
The book features historic resolutions moved by late Rai Saheb Pyare Lal and seconded by late Hakim Ajmal Khan at the Congress Session in 1918, and by late Asaf Ali in the Delhi Municipal Committee in 1938. It also includes the recommendations of the Pattabhi Committee (1947) in the Constituent Assembly, speeches by late Lala Desh Bandhu Gupta and Ch. Brahm Prakash, as well as the author’s own compelling arguments presented in the Delhi State Assembly, Lok Sabha, and Delhi Metropolitan Council between 1955 and 1972.
Additionally, the book incorporates the views of major political parties such as the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, Delhi State Communist Party of India, Bharatiya Janata Party, Janata Party, and Lok Dal, along with statements by dignitaries like Shri H.L. Kapur (Lt. Governor of Delhi), Shri Jag Parvesh Chandra (Chief Executive Councillor), Shri K.C. Pant (Union Defence Minister), and Smt. Aruna Asaf Ali, among others.
