This book was produced on the occasion of an exhibition with the same title hosted by the CSMVS in 2009. It comprises about 125 treasures from both the V&A and the CSMVS. The theme of the exhibition is based primarily on 15 years of dedicated research work by Pauline Rohatgi and her team that included Graham Parlett, Shirley Imray and Pheroza Godrej. To make this occasion more meaningful to art lovers, the V&A and the CSMVS have published the entire research in this richly illustrated volume. The lives of these artists in India are vividly portrayed in eight chapters and often enriched with quotations from their journals. This richly illustrated volume highlights the important yet largely unknown collections from the Victoria & Albert Museum, London of Indian subjects by Western artists. This volume attempts to analyse this subject in relation to the main art historical trends. It also serves as a general reference book on the subject.
